According to this hypothesis, it seems that during the short period, arteriogenesis is reduced in diabetes mellitus due to VEGF resistance, however, in long‐period, angiogenesis increases in spite of VEGF resistance the results of high and continuous stimulation of VEGF.[5] Increase in arteriogenesis is associated with collateral vessel formation, while, increase in angiogenesis is associated with diabetic retinopathy.[5,6] Thus, it seems that the role of VEGF and their receptors in proliferative or NPDR are more complex.

Decrease of Serum Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor, along with its Ocular Level, after the Periocular Injection of Celecoxib and Propranolol in Streptozotocin-induced Diabetic Mouse Model

Background: There is a direct correlation between ocular vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) level and progression of pathological outcomes in diabetic retinopathy. In our previous study, the periocular administration of propranolol and celecoxib could significantly reduce ocular VEGF levels in a diabetic mouse model. Here, we investigated the changes of serum VEGF after ...

Association of the VEGF gene with proliferative diabetic retinopathy but not proteinuria in diabetes.

Diabetic retinopathy and nephropathy cause significant morbidity in patients with diabetes. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a potent angiogenic and vascular permeability factor and is implicated in both of these diabetes complications. We previously reported transfection studies showing the VEGF -460 and VEGF +405 polymorphisms to increase basal VEGF promoter activity by 71% compar...

Protective Effect of Perindopril on Diabetic Retinopathy Is Associated With Decreased Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor–to–Pigment Epithelium–Derived Factor Ratio Involvement of a Mitochondria–Reactive Oxygen Species Pathway

OBJECTIVE—This study aimed to verify whether the decreased vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)–to–pigment epithelium– derived factor (PEDF) ratio can serve as an indicator for the protective effect of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) on diabetic retinopathy (DR) and to investigate the role of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the downregulated VEGF-to-PEDF ratio.

Antiangiogenic drugs and advanced proliferative diabetic retinopathy Drogas antiangiogênicas em retinopatia diabética proliferativa avançada

Advanced diabetic retinopathy with vitreous hemorrhage or tractional retinal detachment (TDR) is an important cause of severe visual loss in patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR), frequently representing an indication for pars plana vitrectomy in diabetic patients. In these cases, surgery is not free from complications such as intraoperative vitreous hemorrhage and retinal rupt...

The Effect of Aerobic Training on Tumor Necrosis Factor alpha, Hypoxia-Inducible Factor-1 alpha & Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Gene Expression in Cardiac Tissue of Diabetic Rats

Objective: The goal of this research was to determine the influence of 4 weeks aerobic training on gene expression of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), hypoxia-inducible factor-1 alpha (HIF-1α) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in the cardiac tissue of diabetic rats. Materials and Methods: In an experimental study, 30 male wistar rats were partitioned into three groups (n=10), d...

Vascular endothelial growth factor in aqueous humor before and after intravitreal injection of bevacizumab in eyes with diabetic retinopathy.

OBJECTIVE To study the concentration of vascular endothelial growth factor in the aqueous humor before and after intravitreal injection of bevacizumab in eyes with proliferative diabetic retinopathy. METHODS In this prospective, interventional case series, 1.25 mg of bevacizumab was injected into the vitreous cavity as preoperative adjunctive therapy 1 week before pars plana vitrectomy to tre...
